NEW: IRG Action supports veto override to solve the teacher shortage

Madison, WI – The Senate will convene tomorrow to attempt to override vetoes by Governor Evers, including a veto on a bill that would help solve the teacher supply crisis.

SB 917 tried to solve the teacher shortage with “teacher apprenticeships” – a bipartisan solution used in 34 states – before Governor Evers vetoed it to do his own version. However, despite public and private schools’ urgent need for teachers, the Governor has limited what colleges can participate, kept K-12 schools in the dark, and slow-rolled the program’s rollout.

THE QUOTE

“As it stands, Governor Evers’ program to solve the teacher shortage cuts out Milwaukee, Madison, and much of rural Wisconsin. He has had months to promote and grow participation in a potentially good solution, but has gone silent. Senate Democrats have a choice: override the SB 917 veto to let eager universities opt in or watch urban and rural teaching jobs remain unfilled.” – Quinton Klabon, Senior Research Director, Institute for Reforming Government
